Insoles, Shoe Inserts, Orthotics... What's the Difference?

Right, let's talk about your feet! We're going to clear up some confusion about the terms "insoles", "shoe inserts", and "functional foot orthoses". You'll hear these words thrown around a lot, but what do they actually mean?

The truth is, there isn't a huge difference between them. Essentially, they all refer to devices that you place inside your shoes to support your feet and improve comfort. But like most things in life, there are levels to this!

Here's a simple breakdown:

  • Insoles: Think of these as the general term for anything you slip into your shoe. They can be basic, providing a bit of extra cushioning and support.
  •  Shoe inserts: These are pretty much the same as insoles. They might offer some arch support or help with specific issues like heel pain.
  • Functional Foot Orthosis: This is the clinical term for an insole, though you might also hear them called "total contact insoles". These are the superheroes of the foot support world! They're designed to correct specific foot problems and biomechanical issues, often requiring a professional assessment and sometimes even custom-made to fit your feet perfectly.

At the Buchanan Clinic, we go beyond simply offering "insoles". We believe in finding the perfect solution for your unique feet. That's why we offer a comprehensive assessment to determine what level of support you need.

Here's how we can help:

Assessment: Our experienced professionals will assess your feet, gait, and any issues you're experiencing. Customised solutions: Based on your assessment, we'll recommend the best option for you. We offer three main types of insoles:

  • Stock insoles: These are pre-made and offer general support and cushioning. A good starting point for many and the cheapest solution.
  • Modular insoles: These are adaptable and can be adjusted to provide a more personalised fit.
  • Fully custom insoles: These are the gold standard! They are created from a mould or scan of your feet, ensuring a perfect fit and targeted support.

When are they

While insoles can provide adequate support for many individuals, foot orthoses are particularly beneficial for those with:

  • Plantar fasciitis: Inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot.
  • Metatarsalgia: Pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot.
  • Heel spurs: A bony growth on the underside of the heel bone.
  • Bunions: A bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe.
  • Morton's neuroma: A thickening of the tissue around a nerve in the foot, usually between the third and fourth toes.
  • Flat feet (pes planus): A condition where the arches of the feet are flattened.
  • High arches (pes cavus): A condition where the arches of the feet are abnormally high.
